Between the salty air drifting through our Airbnb windows, the sound of Italian music echoing through the hills each morning, and the glow of tiny homes stacked along the cliffs at sunset, it felt less like a vacation and more like stepping into another rhythm of life entirely.

It was peaceful and chaotic all at once.

And somehow…that’s exactly what made it magical.

We spent four days on the Amalfi Coast in late September staying in Conca dei Marini with my grandparents, and by the end of the trip, we all agreed on the same thing:

We wished we had stayed longer.

Best Time To Visit Amalfi Coast

We visited from September 18–22, and honestly, it felt perfect.

Warm sunny days. Cooler evenings. Humid ocean air.
No rain during our stay, although storms rolled in shortly after we left.

Late September felt ideal because:

• the ocean was still warm
• mornings were peaceful
• ferries were running
• restaurants were open
• but it wasn’t brutally hot.

If I went again, I would absolutely return during late September or early October.

The Ferry Ride Into Amalfi Felt Like The Official Start Of The Trip

After landing in Italy and navigating trains and stations, stepping onto the ferry suddenly felt like vacation officially started.

Watching the coastline slowly appear from the water was surreal.

Tiny colorful buildings stacked into cliffs.
Boats floating in bright blue water.
Mountains dropping straight into the ocean.

It genuinely did not feel real.

We mostly used buses once we were actually staying in Conca dei Marini, but I’m really glad we experienced arriving by ferry at least once.

It also felt WAY less stressful than driving those cliffside roads ourselves.

Where We Stayed On The Amalfi Coast

We stayed in this Airbnb in Conca dei Marini for around $890 total:

And I genuinely still think about it almost daily.

Not because it was ultra luxury.

Because it felt like living inside a dream.

Every morning, we woke up to ocean breezes floating through the windows while the downstairs neighbor played Italian music through his plant-covered balcony. We would make scrambled eggs with local eggs from the tiny grocery store nearby, sip coffee while staring at the sea, and watch the hazy morning light hit the boats in the distance.

It felt peaceful in a way that’s hard to explain.

Not silent.

Alive.

The Biggest Warning: THE STAIRS

I need to emotionally prepare you for this.

The Amalfi Coast has SO MANY STAIRS.

Like…an unreasonable amount of stairs.

We counted ours.

128 stairs.

Every single day.

Do not bring a giant suitcase to the Amalfi Coast unless you enjoy suffering emotionally and physically on staircases.

You will regret every life decision you’ve ever made.

Everyone in our group, including my grandparents, used backpacking backpacks instead, and I’m convinced that saved the trip.

Nobody is going to carry your luggage for you.

And yes, by day two your calves will look incredible.

The Amalfi Coast women must have superhuman leg strength.

Is The Amalfi Coast Walkable?

Honestly?

Not really.

At least not in the way people imagine before visiting.

The towns themselves are small and walkable once you’re inside them. Amalfi town, for example, is surprisingly tiny. You can walk across most of it in about 15 minutes.

But getting BETWEEN towns is another story.

The roads are narrow cliffside roads with almost no sidewalks in certain areas.

We stayed in Conca dei Marini, which meant:

• buses
• stairs
• ferries
• or expensive taxis.

Renting a car looked absolutely terrifying.

The buses regularly had to reverse to let each other pass on tiny cliffside roads while tourists silently questioned all their life choices.

Terrifying. Impressive. Weirdly funny.

And somehow…the bus drivers were still incredibly skilled.

The Amalfi Coast Bus System (An Honest Survival Guide)

I wish someone had explained this to me before we arrived.

When we first got off the ferry in Amalfi, we were exhausted, starving, confused, and immediately thrown into complete transportation chaos.

There were crowds everywhere. Buses parked in every direction. Limited signage. People pushing to board. Stops that felt unclear.

At one point, we got so lost late at night that we ended up asking a local Italian man for help in broken Italian…who kindly gave us a ride back toward our Airbnb.

Here’s what I learned:

• Buy bus tickets at tobacco shops or from the port attendants walking around.
• Keep cash just in case.
• Expect crowds.
• Don’t panic.
• Once you understand the system, it becomes MUCH easier.

And honestly?

Once we figured it out, hopping between towns suddenly became part of the adventure.

It was also surprisingly cheap. Usually only a couple euros per stop.

If we went back, we would spend even more time exploring nearby towns.

We Loved The Beach Clubs More Than We Expected

One of my favorite memories was simply swimming in the ocean and spending time at the beach clubs.

There’s something surreal about floating in the Mediterranean surrounded by cliffs and tiny colorful towns. This was one of those moments where the Amalfi Coast finally felt real to me. The colorful beach umbrellas, the cliffside buildings stacked above the sea, the smell of sunscreen and saltwater… it genuinely looked like a postcard in real life.

It didn’t feel flashy or overproduced.

People were just swimming, tanning, relaxing, eating snacks, and enjoying life.

The beaches were way more laid back than I expected.

And honestly?

After climbing hundreds of stairs every day, jumping into the ocean felt AMAZING.

This beach club is right next to the Amalfi Coast port and it’s free unless you want to reserve a lounger and umbrella.

We loved watching the boats pass in and out of the port.

The Best Food We Ate On The Amalfi Coast

CICA F.lli De Lucia (The Famous Fish Cone)

This ended up being one of our favorite meals of the entire trip.

And technically…it’s just fried seafood in a paper cone.

But somehow it tasted like summer and chaos and vacation all at once.

There was a huge line outside this tiny little hole-in-the-wall seafood spot called:

We grabbed our fish cones and sat on random stone steps eating fried seafood while people rushed past us through Amalfi.

Core memory.

Savoia Restaurant In Amalfi

The very first thing we did after arriving by ferry was collapse into the closest restaurant because we were starving.

That restaurant ended up being Savoia near the Amalfi port, and I still think about that pizza.

At the time, everything felt chaotic:

• buses everywhere
• people rushing
• luggage
• confusion
• heat
• exhaustion

And then suddenly:

Pizza.

Cold drinks.

Relief.

The kind of relief that instantly becomes part of the memory forever.

The Coffee Shop We Still Talk About

One of my favorite hidden gems on the Amalfi Coast was:

This tiny ceramic-covered coffee shop overlooked the ocean and had:

• incredible espresso
• pastries
• unreal views
• and the exact atmosphere you dream Italy will feel like.

“What if this was just your normal everyday life?”

The Amalfi Coast is covered in lemons, but after taking the tour, we appreciated them in a completely different way.

We learned:

• the history of lemon farming
• how difficult farming has become
• how climate change is affecting local growers
• and how tourism has slowly replaced farming for many families.

It made the entire coast feel more human and less like just a “destination.”

The Famous Amalfi Lemon Sorbet

And yes… we met the famous TikTok lemon sorbet guy in Amalfi .

If you’ve spent any amount of time on travel TikTok, you’ve probably seen the videos of the Italian man dramatically singing while serving giant lemon sorbet cups. We honestly thought it might be overhyped… but somehow it ended up being one of the most memorable little moments of our entire trip.

We stopped at Royal Gelato in Amalfi, and sure enough, he came out singing, smiling, and handing out lemon sorbet inside enormous Amalfi lemons while the whole crowd watched and laughed. It felt like one of those perfectly chaotic Italy moments that you secretly hope happens while traveling.

And honestly? The lemon sorbet was SO good.

Cold, tart, refreshing, sweet, and absolutely perfect after walking around in the heat all day.

My grandma said it was her favorite part of the entire Amalfi Coast trip.

It became one of those tiny travel memories we kept talking about long after we got home.

If you visit Amalfi, I genuinely think it’s worth stopping for the experience alone.

The Amalfi Coast Cooking Class

One of my favorite memories from the trip was the cooking class we booked overlooking the Amalfi Coast.

There was something so special about sitting around a table with strangers making fresh mozzarella, tiramisu, and pasta while everyone laughed together.

At one point mozzarella was stretching halfway across the room while the instructor sang Italian songs and everyone pulled out their phones to record it.

It didn’t feel like a tourist activity.

It felt human.

Warm.

Messy.

Joyful.

It reminded me that the best part of traveling isn’t rushing around trying to see everything.

It’s slowing down long enough to sit around a table together.

My grandparents absolutely loved it. And so did we.

What To Wear On The Amalfi Coast

You truly do not need as much clothing as you think.

I mostly rotated:

• linen dresses
• Adidas sneakers
• Birkenstocks
• simple tank tops
• flowy pants

And honestly? That was enough.

You WILL sweat climbing stairs. You WILL rewear outfits.

Nobody cares.

At the Amalfi Cathedral, I forgot my shoulders were exposed and they literally wrapped me in paper to enter.

The Amalfi Cathedral Is Worth Visiting

The Amalfi Cathedral ended up being one of the most unexpectedly beautiful places we visited.

The interior felt grand and peaceful and dramatic all at once.

Absolutely worth the entrance fee.

And honestly, after the heat and chaos outside, stepping inside felt almost emotional.

The Amalfi Coast Really Is That Romantic

One thing that surprised me most about the Amalfi Coast was how beautiful the ordinary moments felt.

Not just the famous viewpoints or beach clubs. Even walking up random staircases felt cinematic. Everywhere we turned there were climbing vines, faded walls, hidden courtyards, lemon trees, and tiny details that looked straight out of an old Italian film.

I wore this breezy white dress constantly because it somehow matched the entire vibe of the coast perfectly. Comfortable enough for endless stairs… but still felt romantic and effortless for photos.

Honestly, Amalfi made me want to romanticize everything.

Random Things We Didn’t Expect in Amalfi

Amalfi Coast Merch Is Everywhere

We genuinely did not expect the Amalfi Coast to have so much tourist merch everywhere.

Sweatshirts, hats, linen sets, ceramics, lemon everything… every town had little shops selling Amalfi Coast clothing and souvenirs. Some of it was cheesy, but honestly some of the sweatshirts were cute.

Especially at Brandy Melville. My sister has worked for Brandy Melville for over 10 years, so stopping into Brandy stores while traveling has weirdly become tradition for me.

One thing we learned quickly:
Even though the Amalfi Coast looks super luxurious online, a lot of it still feels very casual and lived-in in real life. Which honestly made us love it more.

It didn’t feel overly polished or fake. It felt real.

The Amalfi Coast At Night

The evenings felt completely different from the daytime chaos.

At night:

• you could hear crickets
• boats glowing in the distance
• soft conversations drifting through windows
• ocean air moving through the hills
• lights twinkling below the cliffs.

Most nights, we simply stayed at the Airbnb.

Cooking pasta.

Eating bread and olive oil from the local grocery store.

Talking for hours.

Reading outside.

Watching the coastline glow in the dark.

And somehow those simple moments ended up feeling more luxurious than anything else.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting The Amalfi Coast

1. Don’t Overpack

Seriously.

2. The Amalfi Coast Is Physically Exhausting

Beautiful. But exhausting.

3. Wake Up Early At Least Once

Before 7am, the Amalfi Coast feels completely different.

Locals opening shops. Dogs walking through quiet streets. Music floating from balconies. Empty alleyways.

Pure magic.

4. Handmade Shops Matter More

A lot of the lemon souvenirs near the port start blending together.

But the handmade shops?

Those are special.

One of our favorite stores was:

We ended up buying a massive watercolor painting there that now hangs framed in our home, and every time I look at it, I’m instantly back in Italy again.

Was The Amalfi Coast Worth It?

Completely. Not because it was perfect. Because it felt alive.

Messy. Beautiful. Humid. Loud. Peaceful. Exhausting. Romantic.

It reminded us how much beauty exists in simplicity.

I think that’s why I’ll always miss it.

Not the luxury.

The feeling.

The ocean breeze through the windows.

The morning music from downstairs.

The fish cone on the steps.

The glowing houses at night.

My grandparents laughing on cliffside buses.

The kind local who helped us when we were lost.

The realization that maybe a beautiful life doesn’t have to be a complicated one.

And if we ever go back?
